Sathiyana, sometimes written as Sathiana, is a key forest range in the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve. This area in Uttar Pradesh is a top spot for people who love nature. The name comes from a local legend that blends history and myth.
The word Sathiyana relates to the practice of Sati. This was an old custom where a widow burned herself on her husband’s funeral pyre. Local stories link the name to Rani Subhadra. She was the wife of Raja Ganga Ram Shah. When the Raja died in 1844, Rani Subhadra committed Sati to honor him.
If you travel deep into the zone, you will find a small shrine. It sits hidden among tall Sal trees and thick grass. This shrine sits on the exact spot where the event happened. It remains a quiet place of memory in the middle of the wild. The original shrine was destroyed by the wild elephants few years ago and a new shrine replaced the damaged one.
Beyond the ghosts of the past, the Sathiyana Range is famous for its wide open plains. These grasslands provide the perfect home for rare animals. The Swamp Deer, also known as Barasingha, graze here in large groups. Large herds of Asian Elephants move through the brush. The Royal Bengal Tiger also hunts in these meadows. The mix of thick woods and open fields makes it one of the best places to spot these creatures in the wild.
